WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats said on Saturday they were poised for victory in the November congressional elections and accused Republicans of siding with special interests on issues ranging from Social Security ( news - web sites) to a prescription drug benefit for the elderly.

"Republicans in Congress have had their opportunity to lead, and they have failed," Nevada Democratic candidate for Congress Dario Herrera said in the weekly Democratic radio address.

"Time and time again, on issue after issue, they side with the powerful special interests, while Democrats fight to secure America's future for all our families."

He criticized Republican plans to carve up Social Security taxes to create private accounts that workers could invest in stocks and bonds.

"Here in Las Vegas, we know a thing or two about gambling, and we know that Social Security should never be put on the Wall Street roulette wheel," Herrera said.

Democrats will be meeting this weekend in Las Vegas, Herrera's home town, to map out their strategy for November's congressional elections.

Herrera called a Republican-backed plan to create a prescription drug benefit for the elderly through private health insurers a "fraud written by the drug companies for the drug companies."

Democrats want to provide a drug benefit through the government-run Medicare elderly health care program.

He said Democrats were "poised for historic victories" that will win control of the House of Representatives from Republicans and expand Democratic control of the Senate.
