I think the (normal? normative?) answer is described at this semi-official looking site, which turned up as the first google hit. normanconquest.co.uk . Though given that I maladroitly left out any qualifier of success, I guess it's arguable. The Vikings do have a history there, of course. I wouldn't have known, but their last major effort seems to have been contemporary with the Norman Conquest, though not nearly as successful. See viking.no and emuseum.mnsu.edu .
