Kumar, Looks as though they hit themselves in the purse too, and continue to do so. China is getting rich while India is still celebrating 50 years of independent poverty.

I guess that India had a greater GDP per capita when Indians, like Kiwis, were British subjects. Same with Zimbabwe. Same with a lot of places.

Independence is over-rated, of greater benefit to those who contrive to take power and therefore the money than the serfs who seem never to be the primary beneficiaries [or to benefit at all] from independence.
