Here is the correct answer.

Ask ANY farmer which of the other two farmers is more apt to lie.

If you ask that of T he will point to L
If you ask that of L he will point to T
If you ask that of U he will give a random answer but will always point to either T or L since he can not point to himself.

In all cases, ask the next question to the framer that was selected. It will always be T or L an never U.

Alternatively you could pick a farmer at random and ask which one of the other two is more apt to tell the truth.

Farmer T will point to farmer U
Farmer L will point to farmer U
Farmer U will point to either farrmer T or L but not himself.

If you ask this as your first question you must select the farmer not pointed to. Again in all cases that farmer will not be U but will be either T or L.

The second question must be of the nature:

What WOULD YOU say if I WAS to ask YOU which is the correct road to take. Farmer T would tell the truth he would say what in fact he would say and point to the correct road. Farmer L would lie about what he would say (since if you asked him point plank he would lie and point to the wrong road, when you ask him what he would say (hypothetically speaking), he would point to the road that you in fact did want to take.

Alternatively, What WOULD you say if I WAS to ask you which of the roads is the incorrect road to take. The answer to that question will always be the road you do not want to take so you select the other road.

You can also specifically ask "what response would the liar tell me if I asked him". Alternatively one could ask "what response would the farmer that always tells the truh give me if I was to ask him". In either case you must sort out the reply as appropriate.

Note that a generic "What would HE say etc etc etc, does not work in the 3 framer problem (since HE might inadvertantly be U and give random answers).

In a stand alone problem with only two farmers ever where there is no U problem, You could ask what "would HE say ..." but with a third unknown farmer in the mix that question no longer works.
