About 1 million troops lined up for the final thrust into Germany. But the question is how many nuclear weapons did the US have in comparison with Russia between 1945 and 1949? We had 6 of them by the end of 1945, and 110 of them by 1948 while Stalin had zero... nrdc.org If the situation had been reversed, what do you think Stalin would have done?? But overall, you're right.. Both sides were tired of war and there was a hue and cry to "send the boys home". But the nuclear leverage would have likely sufficed had the US and Europe been prepared to pay the price for eliminating Soviet presence from outside of its borders. And there likely would have been massive defections of Soviet troops to the West. Hawk

Carl, Nobody wanted to keep fighting after VE day... including the Sovs. The reality is, is that in '45 the Soviet army was burned out. Had the US wanted to, it could have gone all the way to Moscow. That's without nuclear weapons BTW, or allies. Most people do not realize just how powerful the US was/is. The United States started to curtail war production in Nov of 44; my father was released from military service in Nov. '44. US production, especially aircraft was cut dramatically after VE day. Common views in the US post WW2 is that the Germans had all these "secret weapons" under development but most were junk and dead ends. After WW2 Stalin, knowing just how weak he truly was, used his leftist allies in the west to create a propaganda campaign to tout the Soviet army and denigrate US lendlease aid. Did you know that armor Soviet Guard Regiments were equipt with the vastly superior Sherman tank?? I saw a National Public TV program about a year ago on Soviet WW2 air, and the they were speaking about some Soviet air ace. "He flew the Yak yada, yada yada...", quick flash of this guy leaned up against a US built AirCobra. Hehehe...
