I think you missed my point. Religions do exactly what you describe above also. Yet you attack them for divisiveness because the exclude members of other religions from those bonds. BUT NATIONS DO EXACTLY THE SAME THING, except other nations and their members are excluded. And vilified. And demonized. .
It's called "patriotism". The scoundrel's last refuge.
That's the point. Your state-owned-and-operated schools are hardly innocent in that regard.

I don't know how the costs could be borne by society, but as a hypothetical...sure.
How are the costs born now? Through taxes. The state collects taxes, then divides them up on a per-child basis and gives the appropriate amount of money to the school the child is attending.

Provided they educate the children in the manner and to the level to which they are entitled.
And are they doing that now (in your opinion) in the state schools?
