rob,

<< apparently the BBC can't see the truth about niche technologies >>

Well, part of the problem here is that while IMJ & PLaF would like to convince the world that 1xRTT, which they both once called "an interim step to 3G" has transmogrified itself into 3G, so far they have only been successful in the Americas - not ROW.

Another part of the problem is that the Korean carriers, regardless of the admonishnment to them by IMJ that they should be promoting 1xRTT as 3G, refer to 1xRTT as 2.5G, and they refer to 1x-EV-DO, 1x-EV-DV, and 3GSM as 3G, regardless of the spectrum it is or will be depoyed in.

To make matters worse the LG 1x-EV-DO 3G handsets that were supposed to be in Korean consumers hands in May didn't make it into shops till late June, and the Samsung model scheduled for June still isn't in shops and as a consequence, with the exception of a few commercial modem cards and some preproduction handsets handed out to journalists who visited Seoul at the World Cup there wasn't what a red blooded Asia stationed BBCer could consider being 3G in Korea in June.

... but if YOU want to be a patriotic American repeat after me:

1xRTT is 3G ....

1xRTT is 3G ....

1xRTT is 3G ....

1xRTT is 3G ....

If you do that enough times 1xRTT will be 3G.

Me, I'll call it "next generation" service, and I'm glad to see it finally launched here by PCS, but I'll be happier when I can purchase a 1xRTT data enabled handset at Verizon.
