But there have been plenty of dissidents who have died quietly in jail- men you never heard of (tons of them). I think they are much more of a pain out of jail, free in other countries to publish- I know Alexander was- and his writing did a lot to discredit the USSR. And the writing of other dissidents has done the same. Many Chinese writers have had a huge impact outside of China. Inside they would be powerless, imo.
