how do you tell when they are ripe

I like to wait until tomatoes are uniform in color and slightly soft to the touch. But I also found the Bradywines I grew last had a tendency to spoil on the vine if I used the same criteria I used with hybrid tomatoes to determine when they are ripe. Hence I suggest don't try to let Brandywines ripen on the vine, instead pick them before they are vine ripe.
