AMD Opens Non-PC Internet Appliances Group Online staff -- Electronic News, 8/9/2002 Charting a course toward the non-PC Internet applications market, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. today opened offices in Austin for its recently developed personal connectivity solutions group (PCS). PCS was formed with the February acquisition of Alchemy Semiconductor, a MIPS-based microprocessor company. "This acquisition provided an entry for AMD into the non-PC Internet appliance market, meeting a key request from customers of AMD's computation products group and memory group,” said Hector Ruiz, AMD’s president and CEO, in a statement. “Today's festivities are a celebration of our new business group and new direction for AMD." Ruiz continued to say that the non-PC Internet appliance market, including devices like Web tablets, automotive navigation systems, small-office networking and communication devices, has strong potential.>/b> "Connectivity devices will explode in capability and perceived value as we enable new applications utilizing wired and wireless broadband pipelines,” he said. [Harry: Someone thinks there are new growth markets in the near future.] The PCS product line includes the Alchemy line of MIPS technology-based SOC processors, and AMD's legacy embedded processors, networking and communications technologies.
