American Eagle Outfitters 2nd-quarter earnings drop

WARRENDALE, Pa., Aug 15 (Reuters) - Youth-oriented apparel
chain American Eagle Outfitters Inc. <AEOS.O> on Thursday said
second-quarter earnings fell by a third as sales at stores open
for at least a year fell.
American Eagle posted earnings of $10.1 million, or 14
cents per diluted share for the quarter ended Aug. 3. That
compared with $15.3 million, or 21 cents per share, in the same
period of the prior year.
Last week, the company indicated that based on below-plan
July sales, earnings would be at the low end of its previously
reduced range of 14 cents to 17 cents.
Total sales for the quarter rose 9.2 percent to $319.2
million. But sales at stores open for at least a year, or
same-store sales, fell 5.5 percent.
