It is quite clear that an alien landing could drag the market back up through 20,000. But in the absence of a creditary exchange system for their investment (little green plastic cards cannot be trusted across the vastness of the space time continuum as we do not have any LGATMS on this planet), and the lack of a use for Gold Pressed Latinum to drive our warp converters leaves us with but two alternatives for trade with the LGF (Little Green Folk). These are 1.) to barter with what space goods they bring, or 2.) to use a common trade item. Gold was suggested as it takes up little room on the space ships and does not corrode while it is being re-entered through the atmosphere.
