Wal-Mart Sees Same-Store Sales Up 4-6 Pct

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT - News), the world's leading retailer, on Monday said it expects sales at stores open at least a year to rise 4 percent to 6 percent this month. ADVERTISEMENT

Sales through Aug. 9 were in line with the forecast for the month, it said.

Wal-Mart, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, said in a recorded statement that sales of back-to-school merchandise were strong amid good customer traffic in the latest week at its Wal-Mart division. Among the week's leading merchandise categories were fabrics, girls' wear, pet supplies, back-packs, electronics and food.

Wal-Mart said its Sam's Club division saw good sales of items such as fresh produce, household chemicals, video games, furniture, pet supplies, baby care products and pharmacy goods.

The retailer plans to report August same-store sales on Sept. 5. Its shares ended on Friday at $49.20, amid a 52-week trading range of $43.60 to $63.94.
