My mother used to work in Administration at a very prestigious NE university in Boston which is part of that Ivory Tower. She remarked many times that those with conservative philosphies (whether in Admin, professors, etc.) were generally very circumspect about advertising those tendencies amongst their peers........

My husband likes to tell the tale of how the media were shocked when Nixon was elected, because nobody they knew voted for him.

If you mean the 68 Presidential election, I don't think the media were shocked at all. Nixon had been leading right up to the end. Humphrey made a run in the last week or so but not enough.

I was shocked, not that he won, but that the country was dumb enough to let a paranoid sob be president. Little did I know what was to follow. (throwaway line)
