Right, but Saddam is desperately trying to morph away from being a secular leader into being a champion of the Islamist cause. Lots of his political rhetoric is now couched in religious terms. He has stopped building his palaces and begun a huge crash program for building humungous mosques throughout Iraq, once again squandering the nations treasury. He is currently subsidizing Islamist militia in their war against civilians in Israel. Imo he thinks casting himself as the leader of the new Vogue of the Arab world - Islamism will help him survive and prosper. That he now maybe toying with Islamist militia with possible connections to al Qaeda does not surprise me - not one whit.
