While Symbian devices so far - all from Nokia - come equipped with PIM and messaging applications of various kinds, users are required to navigate between the various applications to get an overview of their situation - whether it's to find out how many unread e-mails they have, what tasks are due and when that pesky meeting starts. Active Desk from Cibenix brought a solution to that problem to Nokia's 9200 Communicator series, and now a version is ready for the Nokia 7650 as well. Active Desk for the 7650 allows users to fully customise the display, including choosing wallpapers and text colours in any of the application's five customisable views of the key information stored on a Nokia 7650. Such information includes calendar entries, to-dos and messages, in a manner similar to that of the Today screen on Microsoft's Pocket PC platform, and Active Desk also includes a Task Switcher of its own. A summary 'Home' view of all the key calendar, to-do, and messaging information on the phone allows users to create messages, agenda entries, and make phone calls from one single view. Meanwhile, the Calendar view offers a consolidated view of all upcoming meetings, day memos and anniversaries, with the ability to create and edit new entries. Taking the ToDo function of the 7650 a step further, the application also allows users to keep several ToDo lists on the 7650, and also offers a customisable interface to view one or more lists at a time. Meanwhile, a messages summary view lets users create new messages (MMS, SMS and e-mail) directly from the view, which also provides a summary of the key message folders and message types. Lastly, Active Desk for the 7650 also expands slightly on the 7650's Favourites application by offering a view where users can create a list of thei favourite application, and access the Nokia Favourites application from a link within the Active Desk view in order to get access to shortcuts to specific documents, multi-media files, and on-line pages since Active Desk's own view doesn't support such functionality. << - Eric -
