The main tool for these fanatics is the fact that the Nevada Test Site has never been well-understood by the public (too much 'classified' national defense activity). Thus Yucca Mountain has been difficult to represent without risking a leaking of information about historical activities in the vicinity (Something only Democrat Senators are allowed to do). Without going into detail, let's just say that the "planned" Yucca Mountain Repository is not so much a new project, but an expansion or improvement of a very old one, to meet an enhanced public need. The original goal of the left here was to pump liberal political candidates by using the popular libel of nuclear power to paint the enemy as a "special interest", trying to "bury their waste in our back yard". This has been effective, allowing liberal idiots like Harry Reid and Richard Bryan to have political careers in a conservative state, by pumping the "Yucca issue" and scaring their constituents. While Bryan may have been able to win a few races anyway, Harry has never, to my recollection, been elected to the Senate by more than 1,000 votes (the last win being in 1998, over John Ensign, by a handful of votes, and after an inconclusive recount). The intensity of the anti-Yucca propaganda has made "official" Yucca opposition a PR admission ticket to Nevada politics. Bush and Rove pushed the issue to conclusion this year partly because the Republican governor is a shoo-in, and there's no Senate race. Their strategy appears successful, as residents can see the "Yucca thing" already fading away, despite the fact that this is an election year. The next phase will probably call into question the allocation of scarce state funds for federal lawsuits against Yucca, based on the now-legitimate argument that it's a lost cause. The papers speculate that, if the lawsuits are pursued diligently (i.e., if the lawyers get this wastful funding) the "first" waste shipments will begin around 2011. (In actuality, we should probably refer to them as the "new waste"). That would be the final date for any additional liberal propaganda effect that might be attempted, as once it's there, the public will begin to realize that they have been lied to about the dangers. In reality, I expect the shipments will be a few years sooner, because the state legislature will be reluctant to put up real money where the smoke has been blown on Yucca Mountain...
