It seems logically impossible to hypothesize an existence wherein humankind knew with certainty from the very beginning that there is no "god" and no afterlife, and thus there never was such a thing as "religion." But if we stretched our minds to imagine such an existence ... My guess is that it would have evolved through natural selection to a world ruled by the strong, with no charity, no mercy, and no compassion.

Come to think of it, every science fiction movie I can think of that projects a future world, always portrays it just about the way I describe. I may well be wrong about that, but my impression of these movies is that they always present a bleak future ... and a future where God is dead.
