i edited my post to you...they are indeed offering non-union early retirement incentives...

my overall point is even using attrition and early retirement....these are basically people who did not expect to be "retired" at this stage of the game. some may have economic resources to weather it others may not and will become a part of the new "workforce" looking for jobs.

so...

i don't think these folks are going to be going out buying suv's and home furnishings soon.

or eating out...

or making "leisure" travel plans

or

doing just about any number of discretionary spending that our economy seems to be so dependent upon.

"agree the economic news isn't great, but I think that the media tends to overplay downturns and layoffs given the actual success that people in outplacement have in finding new employment eventually"

i'm not sure how the media is overplaying it. right now i'm just seeing "reporting"...back when bush41 was in office, we were definitely seeing overplaying. constant drip, drip, drip of the "misery index" on the nightly news.

but we are to a point where just about everyone you know on a personal level either knows someone who has lost or will be losing a job......the political disconnect (perilous to one's re-election) is to ignore that or try to soft pedal the reality.
