I think that there is a larger category of conservative Christians of which fundamentalists and evangelicals are only a part, people who would subscribe to the creeds, embracing the Trinity and the Resurrection, for example, and acknowledging that salvation comes through Christ, without necessarily asserting that they know the precise mechanism, and therefore whether, in the end, some individual did not have a clarifying moment to embrace salvation. Additionally, there are moderates who have a hard time knowing what to do with hell, even if they accept a large portion of the Gospel. I once read in a middle- of- the-road Catholic newspaper, in a column authored by a priest, that although we must believe in hell, we do not know if anyone is there. There was no subsequent furor over this assertion, even though it is not quite orthodox.......
