Intel Gains Market Share In Weak 2nd Quarter PC Chip Market
By Mark Boslet, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

PALO ALTO, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - News) retook market share in the PC microprocessor business from competitor Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - News) in an otherwise dismal second quarter for producers, researchers at IDC said.

Shipments of x86 chips used in personal computers fell 11.6% in the second quarter, IDC said. Normally shipments rise modestly from the seasonally slow first quarter.

Manufacturers may have overshipped processors in the first quarter as computer makers bought up newer, faster chips and replenished inventories, said IDC senior analyst Shane Rau, explaining the decline.

Intel saw its share of the market rise to 81.9% in the quarter from 79.3% in the first quarter, IDC said. AMD showed the greatest loss of momentum with shipments slipping almost 25%.
