This double-dip recession business has a number of recent historical precedents. Given the fondness of the government for publishing adjusted numbers I wouldn't be so sure that one could say we are out of the first dip yet. If last month's weak consumer demand continues, then the business-led recession that started around first quarter of 2001 could turn into a demand-driven recession, and that's far worse.

Rates are at a 40 year low now, it would appear the last couple of cuts haven't been of much positive effect so far and if the Fed chooses to cut indiscriminately then they will run out of ammunition. Not to mention the impact on the dollar as fixed-income investments offshore become more attractive.

Certainly you don't expect them to cut rates just to shore up a used-to-be software company that had one large and largely circumstantial success in the 90s and has no prospects other than a irreversible march into stagnation and decline like their once-mentor IBM?
