Boeing, Parts Makers Fall as Airline Industry Slumps (Update2)
By Rachel Layne

Chicago, Aug. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of planemaker Boeing Co. and equipment makers such as Honeywell International Inc. had their biggest drop since the Sept. 11 attacks on concern airlines will pare fleets further after American Airlines announced cost cuts and US Airways Group Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Aerospace and Defense index fell 14.31, or 6.3 percent, to 213.48 at 4:30 p.m., its largest drop since Sept. 17. The decline was led by Boeing, the world's biggest planemaker; Honeywell, the biggest maker of cockpit controls; and United Technologies Corp., the maker of Pratt & Whitney engines.

AMR Corp.'s American Airlines, the world's biggest airline, said it would cut 7,000 jobs, retire planes and defer delivery of new aircraft. The news came two days after US Airways sought protection from creditors, and a day after UAL Corp. shares plunged as analysts said the parent of United Airlines may be the next major carrier to file for bankruptcy.

``What we're seeing is a jerking back to reality by virtue of the US Airways bankruptcy and the potential for UAL as well,'' said Paul Nisbet, a JSA Research analyst who has ``hold'' ratings on Honeywell, Boeing and United Technologies and doesn't own their shares. ``It's a reminder that things are not improving as rapidly as everyone would like to see.''
