I'm not sure what you're referring to -- the total American KIA in Vietnam were 58,000.

Nixon did everything he could conceivably have done. It wasn't at all feasible to just withdraw from the situation the day he took office -- the Democrats had gotten us in far too deep for that.

It was just very simplistic to think that he was going to withdraw overnight. LBJ had made such a mess of it we were lucky Nixon got us out as quickly as he did.

And more important, he stuck those dopey price controls on that screwed the economy for 5 years.

I agree; the price controls were clearly a mistake -- I don't know about 5 years though.

It was a bad time. Today when I think back on the war I'm still amazed that (a) we were there in the first place and (b) we didn't run the war according to some reasonable precursor to the Powell Doctrine.
