In this case it would seem easy for anyone in the public to be in the know - just spend a day shopping. It's nothing to do with Canadians - lots of Americans couldn't compete with Wal Mart either. You have to wonder what HBC was thinking, after watching K Mart attemt a head to head "everyday low price" strategy, decide that would be the way for Zellers to go. Less efficient, less selection, poorer inventory control, half the sales per sq ft, but try and go directly against the most succesful retailor on earth with the same strategy and prices just a little higher.

70% of the Bay sales are clothes so they have been the big loser against the invasion of the Gaps and American Eagles and growth of big box specialy stores, not to mention Winners that has reported very strong results They've moved downscale from what they were a few years back and have little to differentiate themself from Sears. The constant discounts/scratch N save days have trained people to just keep putting purchases off and wait for bigger and bigger markdowns.

It's just impossible for me to see how either one could ever manage to turn things around.
