It is hard to imagine what the Muslim world would be like in its pagan, pre- Islamic form, or, alternately, in a Christian form. The energy imparted by Islam originally inspired great kingdoms, as in the Caliphate in Baghdad or the principality of Cordova, and so it appears to have been an improvement over their prior pastoral paganism. On the other hand, even though the Arab world, at its height, was in advance of Western Europe, its creative impulses were eventually exhausted, and Western Europe led the way beyond a revival of the civilization of antiquity, into the modern world. Thus, it may be that Christianity had the most benign influence, in the long run. However, these are speculations leaving so much unexamined, they can hardly be called strong propositions......

I don't know why this came to mind, but I'm very fond of it. Have you ever heard ig sung? It is very cute.

The bells of hell go ting-a-ling-a-ling
For you but not for me:
And the little devils how they sing-a-ling-a-ling
For you but not for me.
O death, where is thy sting-a-ling-a-ling,
O Grave, thy victor-ee?
The bells of hell go ting-a-ling-a-ling,
For you but not for me.
