OK,

Going back a little further, the Vietnamese suffered during the Japanese occupation and helped kick them out. After WW2 the French whined and wanted their colony back. Most Vietnamese wanted (finally) independence and expected it after the loyalty shown to the Allies. The Americans quietly took over from the French.

Iran is full of OK people as far I can determine. Back in the 50's the big oil companies decided to interfere in local politics to ensure USA oil interests were protected.

The Iranian presidents recent remarks are probably allude to those points.

Result? Two countries that could have been good friends of the USA turned out to be real problems. The indigenous populations wishes could have been more carefully listened too (imho)

It's OK ...everyone makes mistakes. It's just that these days...post cold war era, there maybe are opportunities to learn from past mistakes and make the world a more peaceful place.

It's very clear to all Nations that the 9-11 tragedy is a real problem to world stability. I'm fairly sure even the Chinese would be happy to also protect America on that point. They might want to call the Pentagon before flying over to help though -g-

CB,

You've got the Vietnam scenarios all wrong. Remember the French, a nationalist movement, civil war, US takes sides of a not very popular bunch of generals in the south against the popular nationalist movement.

I shouldn't even type this. If I get started and if we all get started on reworking the history of the Vietnam War, we'll bring the thread to a halt for a while.

Definitely enough to note that we have very large disagreements here.
