Actually, I saw some of this more flexible technology in action yesterday. To put money into a trading account, I used to go to the Broker's HQ downtown, leave my cheque at the security cage; and usually it would show up in the account within a day, sometimes 2.

Yesterday, I went into the bank branch at the corner of my street (a whole 1/2 block away). The teller signed off her banking system; from the same terminal signed into the Bank's web broker system and transferred the money to the Margin account where it appeared immediately and was available for trading. If I trusted Internet security sufficiently, I could get this same capability at home.

While I was working, terminals or even PCs were dedicated to a single application. For a single person to perform multiple functions required access to multiple application specific terminals.

And the bank could make further improvements. e.g. - eliminate the need to sign off / sign in with each change in application needed; have the web application support the printer at the Teller's work area rather than printing the transaction record at some distant central printer; etc.

best wishes,
Ian
