What you needed was to able able to recognize a bubble when you were in it. Once you knew that, you knew the risk was quite high and that it could pop at any time with little or no warning. If you were short prior 9/11 you would have made a lot of money. A leveraged market can crash anytime. By the time the average joe realizes the market is a better place than the bank for his money it is too late. The market is for pros and people smart enough to catch a ride with the pros.
