LL, if there is a picture address embedded in the e-mail you received [rich text], opening the e-mail must send a request to the web server where the picture is stored, to retrieve it. That request and where it came from can be monitored back at that server. I have no idea about the details. I get newsletters from WSJ and others that always have pictures. If I open the e-mail while off line, the pictures do not appear because there's no connection to the remote server.

So it doesn't take java. Html will do. If anyone is concerned about this, just don't open strange e-mail or open it while not connected to the internet.
