What would these strategies be?

Apparently ...

bribery.

saforrest writes "Say goodbye to independent academia. In a presentation by Microsoft on Wednesday at the
University of Waterloo, a new joint initiative was announced which involves the addition of a mandatory course on C#
for all electrical and computer engineers. 'Completion of this course will be mandatory for students entering the E&CE program.'" Microsoft's press release is available.

Under curriculum integration, first-choice applicants to UW's E&CE program will be allowed to
take a new pre-university programming course in C#, E&CE 050. Completion of this course will
be mandatory for students entering the E&CE program.
C# is a new programming language
developed by Microsoft.

The existing course E&CE 150, an introductory course to programming, will change from using C++ to C#.

DiCiccio commented on changing curriculum under the agreement, "E&CE weighed all the aspects of it and was
comfortable with the change...UW is really sensitive to curriculum decisions it makes." He also joked, "$2.3 million isn't
enough to sacrifice curriculum."

Bill and Steve are going to go down swinging. You've gotta give 'em that.

Lindows Prepping $199 PC

Roberson also offered an update on the company's defense of a suit brought by Microsoft Corp.,
which alleges that the "Lindows" name infringes Microsoft's "Windows" trademark.

"Many people have congratulated us, prematurely, on our victory." Robertson wrote. "While the
judicial system did block their request to shut us down, a trial is looming for April 2003. At
that time, the judge (or jury) will decide whether Microsoft has a valid trademark for the word
'windows' and whether the Lindows.com name is confusing. In the interim, we're moving through the
legal process where Microsoft is demanding, as part of the discovery process, everything from our
business plan to our list of partner companies."

Robertson said the legal burdens of trying to defend against Microsoft were difficult for a
company with only 39 employees. Lindows is attempting to show that the term "Windows" has been in
general use for many years before Microsoft applied for its copyright.

Hard to imagine Windows and Office on a $199 PC. What have we been trying to tell people for the last two years?

I hear Pella and Anderson are preparing to file a suit against Microsoft for using the term "Windows".
