The situation in the Mideast is always complicated and never "consistent" Win. The American bases in SA have not been closed -- yet. I was interested to see a report that they have been used recently for sorties against Iraq, just as they have been used since 1991. This has no implications for the current state of diplomatic relations between the US and SA, however.

If you expect a close consistency between realty on the ground, diplomatic relationships, and public pronouncements of government officials, then you have not ever studied any period of Middle East history in any detail, that's all I can say.
