And methane. Yes, rot is a giver not a taker.

Wood rot is flourescent and can be seen at night in the forest/bush/woods/swamp and on mine timbers when you extinguish your lamp. One of the main sources of methane in mines is wood rot.

In Geraldton there was a mine that made methane from a drill hole at 3800 feet copiously. The source was natural and unknown although the rock is entirely volcanic and pre any kind of known life (at least 1.8 billion years). The drill hole was lit and kept burning throught the life of the mine. The mine always had bad methane and this source cannot be explained by artificial causes such as wood structures.
