qvr,

pcs is sort of irrelevant to me, since i know where they're headed...

if you read the article closely, you'll see that now even the reliable, staid baby bells are getting squeezed...

see the graph in the lower right quadrant at this link (and that's general industrial credit spreads!):

CDMA the technology likely does exactly what its proponents say it will do (though is evolving MUCH more slowly than the hype); the problem is that the model is flawed. You can already do low bandwidth apps with RIM-style devices on CDPD networks; 3g cannot handle high bandwidth apps. What's worse is there are no compelling middle rate apps that consumers will pay premium dollars for. Voice is completely saturated - in all segments, wired/wireless/domestic/foreign/etc.

To exacerbate all that, the telecom industry (including mobile wireless) is in a mature state within a deflationary environment. Telecoms have huge debts and NO pricing power. Add to that the reemergence of debt-free operators like Worldcom (Jan. 03) and you have the recipe for a long term bust for an entire sector. Doesn't matter that QCOM has no debt if it has no viable customers!
