One major question has been why, when Chamberlin resigned as PM, Churchill became PM instead of Halifax

To be honest, although I like to think I'm some kind of history buff, I am clueless to offer you an answer. Fortunately we have the Internet designed and built by some unknown organization -g-

spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk

When war did come a year later it found a country and Commonwealth wholly united within itself, convinced to the foundations of soul and conscience that every conceivable effort had been made to find the way of sparing Europe the ordeal of war, and that no alternative remained. And that was the best thing that Chamberlain did.

Chamberlain was actually a hero. He did a diplomatic job equivalent to Pearl Harbor on British hopes of peace. Chamberlain was a good guy.

Somehow Churchill appealed to the British spirit (imho).

If we were going down...it was going to be on all guns blazing at the enemy. Part of our historical training I think.
