I don't believe their defctions caused the shift Jeffords did however....

So what about Shelby and Campbell? Actually, their conduct is more heinous than Jeffords', since they bolted to the opposition party, whereas Jeffords simply became an independent.

Did he really become independent? He is aligned with the Democrats.

The situation with Jeffords was more serious because it shifted the balance of one house of congress, but otherwise all three cases are similar.
