The way to clear this up is for you to post your definitions, and then we will know what you mean when we talk about this subject.

We are back to that, are we. I've worn my fragile, aging, fingers out typing the conclusions I draw from a certain sort of pomo, in these cases about the absence of a spot outside history from which to justify truth claims or goodness claims and about the compatibility between democratic political procedures and those views, as opposed to the compatability between absolutists and dictatorial approaches to social life.

No one in their right mind, certainly not this person in his, would try to summarize pomo to you. You've already got your mind made up. It's one of those things that goes in the bag with all the bad things. Okay.

The one thing I haven't yet typed here--I was saving it for just the right moment--but it will never come, is that those views about democracy and its compatibility with non-universalistic approaches to truth and goodness is actually John Dewey's point. And a very good one. And Rorty makes that point, drawing on Dewey, because Rorty is a pragmatist, in addition to his other sins.

One more passing thought on this topic, Bill. On the several campuses I know a bit about, the Marxist faculty members, some of the left faculty members, and any number of moral absolutists of the left variety are upset with the pomo types. And you can imagine why. Pomo chops arrogance down to size and leaves all of us trying to persuade one another rather than denouncing one another.

Should make for great business in the chat rooms on the internet. ;-00
