"The United situation is far more complex than "UAL mechanics won't take a pay cut to save the company ..."

I don't think he was making that point. The point looks to be that the union won't help regardless. It happens pretty frequently unfortunately (for the union workers).

I personally think one of the big ones needs to go belly up to tidy up the industry. It's a mess, and the public will continue to fly and companies will continue to provide the service. I also think it is pretty silly to blame (or for people to allow them to blame) 9-11 for all of their problems.

Fly Southwest. They know how to run a company. A rarity in the airline industry.

The unions appeared reluctant to give cuts and promised to oppose any move toward bankruptcy.
Has anyone told the unions creditors can FORCE a company into bankruptcy? Whether it likes it or not? And then things will be MUCH worse than if it had filed in the first place?

Like it won't get a choice of what chapter to file under. It will almost certainly get the "We take the goodies" chapter.

AND the bankruptcy judge will appoint a special master to run the company. Then what happens depends on what he and the judge decide. And US Marshalls will enforce the decisions if necessary.

It has happened in the past, flappie. Be careful what you wish for...

No it's not. The pilots have taken a cut, the "suits" you hate have taken a 40% pay cut and the nasty CEO works for free. The UNION GUYS won't shave a nickle to save the company. They'll suck up the unemployment.
