what sort of state follows. I gather they don't think the present administration would do so. If that's the opposition argument for the moment, one can generalize that to say that the US generally does not. We have stayed in some places, but generally we do not. And, for not bad reasons. If we stay we are soon viewed as occupiers

Yeah, damned if we do or don't. I think the opposition is trying to use the "Nation Building" business as an excuse not to go in. If we take out Saddam, destroy his Army, and clean out the WMD capability, we can let them choose and operate they Government as they see fit. If we start to get a "Mad Mullah" situation, we can nip it in the bud.
