Bluetooth shows strong growth, analyst says By Robert Keenan CommsDesign.com (08/16/02 11:21 a.m. EST) OYSTER BAY, N.Y. — Bluetooth may be rising out of the ashes and become a stronger player in the wireless design sector, according to a report released Thursday (Aug. 15) by analyst firm Allied Business Intelligence (ABI). Bluetooth chipset shipment will increase to more than 33.8 million in 2002 and will hit more than 1.1 billion chipsets by 2007, the analyst firm said. The 33.8 million number being quoted is 11.2 billion higher than total ABI projected in 2001. This growth, the research agency said, came through a more pragmatic look at the technology and the stabilization of the Bluetooth 1.1 specification, ABI said. Acceptance in the cell phone sector also helped with market growth. "Given the commitment of the mobile handset vendors to Bluetooth, we expect cell phones to account for approximately two-thirds of the Bluetooth shipments in 2002," said Navin Sabharwal, director of residential and networking technologies at ABI. Cell phones, however, will not be the only driver for the technology going forward. ABI's report claims that volume shipments in other market segments, like the consumer electronics sector, will increase in 2003, Sabharwal said. "This will create more diverse and compelling usage scenarios for consumers," he added. ABI's new report is titled, "Bluetooth — the Global outlook for Bluetooth Component and Equipment Markets".
