<AMD plans Athlon boost >
in my best Mr. Burns voice... Exxxcellent.

I guess that accounts for today's move. You think that Hector has created a new culture within AMD? It seems Intel is talking up their future plans while AMD is playing coy. Just look at the Xeon ads on television. I had never seen one until two or three weeks ago.

Reyneso, Re: To get there, AMD moved up the launch of the 2600+ chip, which was not expected until the fourth quarter, to this month.

This is extremely impressive. Except for the 1 GHz launch AMD never released two (or more) new speed-grades at a time AFAIR. So either they fixed some major flaw in the 0.13 micron process which allows much better frequency scaling or this is a paper launch. Let's hope for the former. I am already looking forward to the P4 benchmark comparisons at Anand, Tom etc.

This is just a rumour. Where's the confirmation?

"Rumor" about this weeks launch of 2400+ and 2600+ was also confirmed by Barron's in "The Week Ahead," at least in the internet edition. Can anyone confirm if this is also in the print edition?

The Week Ahead: Aug. 19-23, 2002
Forbes.com staff, 08.17.02, 12:00 PM ET

NEW YORK -
A look ahead to next week's doers and doings in business, entertainment and technology:

...Home Depot
...Lowes
...Bristol Meyers Squibb
...

It's beginning to look a little like Christmas in the office of Hector De Ruiz, CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (nyse: AMD - news - people ). With the back-to-school PC-buying season already upon us, PC makers and the companies that supply them with chips, including AMD and rival Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ), are starting to gear up for the annual holiday sales push. Look for AMD to bring a new version of its AthlonXP chips next week. Intel will likely answer with a chip of its own the week after. That means you can expect the usual gang of PC makers, including Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ), Gateway (nyse: GTW - news - people ) and Dell Computer (nyse: DELL - news - people ), will start pushing new PC models with entertainment as a central theme. But don't expect miracles. Hopes for a back-to-school surge last year were quickly dashed, and the holiday season didn't help much. This year isn't looking much better.

Since I'm pretty sure Intel's announcement is expected the last week of August, and because "The Week Ahead" only talks about the week starting the Monday after publication on Saturday, that pretty much confirms that the launch is just a few days away.
