Chinese chip output up 45% in value in first half of 2002

BEIJING -- Chinese domestic semiconductor output grew 28.7% to 2.6 billion units year-on-year in the first half of 2002 according to reports from Dow Jones. Dow Jones ascribed the figures to a Chinese government-backed research company called CCID.

In value terms the domestic industry's sales gained 45.6% to about $750 million in value terms, the report said.

Sales at 20 of China's 27 domestic chipmakers increased during the first half, the report said.

The report didn't give figures for China's total consumption of semiconductors. Analysts say more than 90% of that is still satisfied by imports rather than local production, despite growing numbers of foreign companies locating chip manufacturing plants in mainland China.

Brian, Dell said without them, group sales would probably see negative growth. I don't remember where I saw that. [end]
