Agents Seize Missiles at New Mexico Facility
Sun Aug 18, 4:40 PM ET

ROSWELL, New Mexico (Reuters) - Federal agents said on Sunday they had seized over 2,300 unregistered missiles at a counter-terrorism school in New Mexico that was training students from Arab countries and arrested its Canadian leader.

David Hudak -- president of HEAT, or High Energy Access Tools, an antiterrorism and police-training services company -- was arrested last week on federal explosives and immigration charges, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms said.

ATF agents found 49 crates of armor-piercing missiles at the school and believe there are about another 4,000 pounds of munitions at the counter-terrorism school that had clients from Yemen and the United Arab Emirates, ATF agent Tom Mangan told reporters.

CNN television quoted Mangan as saying there was no reason to think Hudak had any ties to terrorist groups such as al Qaeda.

Mangan told reporters the students had been cooperating with the investigation.

Hudak, 41, was charged with possessing missiles that were not registered to him, according to a criminal complaint filed on Friday by federal officials at the U.S. District Court in Albuquerque.

"We've been open to every federal agency that could have anything to do with anything about what we do for a living, from the FBI ( news - web sites), ATF, Department of State, everybody," Frank Fish, HEAT director of security, told reporters.

Federal agents found small missiles in 49 explosives crates, according to court records, with 48 missiles in each crate inspected, according the complaint.

"The warheads are designed as military weapons to be used to defeat light armored vehicles and, or, bunkers," the complaint reads.

Agents seized about 1,000 pounds of munitions from the school last week, including the missiles and launchers, and they expect to find several thousand more pounds of munitions in searches this week, they said.

ATF officials allege that Hudak falsified records to obtain the weapons for the school.

Roswell is situated in southeastern New Mexico about 200 miles northeast of El Paso, Texas. The city is world famous for unconfirmed rumors that a UFO crashed in 1947 in the rugged terrain nearby.
