Most of the link has nothing to do with what we've been discussing, but down near the bottom, he says:

That's the danger of using a search engine, I guess -- weirdness of context. And he very well MIGHT have it wrong, as you suggest. Yet, I do have a vague recollection of hearing somewhere that MSFT bought the basis for Excel.
