Some facts - there were 7.3 M foreigners living in Germany in 1999. That makes it more than 10% of the population. iow, Germany is a land of immigrants. Period.

They (sorry, we) are relatively young (70% below 40years). The biggest group are Turks at 2.3 M. Being the biggest group with roots significantly different than the rest, they're also the group that's most visible and/or isolated. The oh so christian population abhores to see minarets sprout up. The only mosque one can see from the car in Munich , stands next to the giant garbage dump hill at #92 - #9 highway cross. Where I live, you have to go look close to discover it in an inner court, next to the docking ramp for the nearby market.
