They havent quite made the $5 BOM target, but if the integration is easy for manufacturers, I think customers will pay an extra $15 for Bluetooth.

Kyocera To Make Bluetooth Modules For Mobile Phones

OSAKA (Nikkei)--Kyocera Corp. (6971) has developed modules that enable mobile phones to use the Bluetooth short-distance wireless communication protocol, company sources said Saturday.

The firm will start sample shipments of the modules for 1,500 yen each to mobile phone manufacturers in September, and begin manufacturing several hundred-thousand units a month as early as March 2003.

The new RF Module is one of the world's smallest, the sources claim, measuring 8.0 by 7.0 by 1.7mm. Kyocera will sell the modules for CDMA cell phones equipped with chips made by Qualcomm Inc. of the U.S. The combination of Kyocera's module and Qualcomm's chips will provide mobile phones with the Bluetooth capability to exchange information with nearby digital equipment.

Following the appearance of Bluetooth-enabled personal computers and digital consumer electronics, major electronic parts manufacturers, such as Murata Mfg. Co. (6981) and Taiyo Yuden Co. (6976), have commercialized Bluetooth modules. Hitachi Maxell Ltd. (6810) has also decided to enter the Bluetooth module market.
