As an occasional genealogy buff, I see it as a potential Full Employment Act for genealogists. I'll assume for the sake of the argument that only whites who are descended from slaveowners will have to pay reparations, but only to blacks who are descended from slaves. All whites who are descended from people who fought on the Yankee side are exempt in the same proportion that this represents in their ancestry, all whites whose parents moved here after 1865 are exempt, all Asians are exempt, all American Indians except maybe Cherokees, some of whom kept slaves, and some blacks who are descended from blacks who kept slaves are not exempt. That means that my husband, whose mother came here from Germany, is already half-exempt. On his father's side, he is partly exempt because of the great great something grandfather who fought on the Yankee side. And so on. I am 1/4 exempt because of the grandfather from Croatia, 1/8 exempt because of the Pennsylvania Dutch grandfather, 1/16 exempt because of the Chippewa great-grandmother, 1/16 exempt because of the French Canadian great-grandfather, 1/16 exempt because of the Irish great-grandfather, and so on. I think I did have 1/32 slave-owners, so I'd have to pay at least 1/32 of a share. Think I may have had ancestors fight on the Southern side of the Civil War, but maybe some on the Yankee side, too, so maybe they cancel out. What I honestly think it is is BS. Hundreds of thousands of people fought and died to free the slaves. Hundreds of thousands of Southerners fought and died who never owned a slave. Most Southerners did not own slaves. Many blacks had ancestors who were never slaves. Slavery ended in 1865, 137 years ago. However, if blacks get reparations for slavery, I want reparations for the way the Indians were treated, I want reparations for the way Irish were treated, I want reparations for the way Catholics were treated, and I also want reparations for the way men treated women in the past. Maybe we should just pay reparations and get rid of affirmative action. Paid, finished, done for. No more special treatment for minority owned business, no more special treatment for women owned businesses. No more complaining, you've been compensated fully. Goodbye, thank you very much, sink or swim.
