> Any thoughts regarding KDDI's recent success?

Here are some spontaneous thoughts for the CDMA2000-1X vs FOMA success:

- KDDI's CDMA2000-1x has more attractive handsets than FOMA and is interoperable
- generally KDDI fees are lower
- KDDI generally has more fashionable phones, DoCoMo's phones are more conservative
- KDDI's handsets generally have more functions, e.g. GPS, camera, JAVA etc. DoCoMo's handsets tend to be more specialized, e.g. camera but no JAVA etc, while KDDI's camera-handset also has GPS and JAVA, DoCoMo does not have such a set. So if you want a handset with GPS+camera+JAVA you need to buy a KDDI handset.
- KDDI has to fight much harder and is more "hungry" than DoCoMo, because (a) it's far below DoCoMo in overall market share AND (b) it's neck to neck with J-Phone
- compared to DoCoMo and J-Phone/Vodafone, KDDI is far less distracted by globalization issues, so KDDI is free to focus 100% on Japan

Don't make a mistake though - DoCoMo recently upgraded conventional imode by a factor of 3 for the 504 series, data from 9.6kbp/s to 28.8 kbp/s. It's less than KDDI's 144kbp/s but also not bad. Note also that these speeds are all nominal for best conditions, and are typically lower in real life.

Don't make another mistake - DoCoMo is a bit like Microsoft: initially Netscape had a better browser then Microsoft, and Macintosh has a windowing system, when MS-DOS still use command-line interfaces, but in the long run Microsoft wins. They same could/could not become true with DoCoMo and KDDI and J-Phone - that's in a way the multi-billion dollar question.
