This is a report of a speech given by a vicesomething (name Yu) of China Unicom at the 2002 China International Telecom Industry Development Conference last week, in Shanghai.

Headline: Unicom full of confidence of future cdma development

...... Unicom Vicesomething Yu .. admitted that Unicom did miss some opportunity to dominate the market using cdma, however, he is confident of future development, especially after resolving the cdma handset supply issue.

...... Yu pointed out GSM capacity of 6 Mhz will reach capacity at 70-80 million with not much room for improvement. CDMA on the other hands, with 10 Mhz, can easily exceed 100 million sub, in addition to easy migration to 3G.

....... Yu said if China Telecom or China netcom are to recieve a spectrum license in the near future, he believes one of them certainly would choose CDMA.

.... as of right now, unicom's combined gsm/cdma subs total 52 million, or 29.2% of market share. However, unicom has more mid and low end users with ARPU of only 80 yuan while China Mobile is about 130 yuan. So using ARPU, unicom only has about 10% market share....
