A lot of the growth of science has been a result of extending our senses and gathering data that would otherwise have been unavailable. The impact of the telescope and microscope both is incalculable. Even particle cloud chambers are mainly devices to "see" what would otherwise be invisible. I also would try something extending my range of vision into the ultra- violet and infra- red parts of the spectrum, just to see if anything interesting came of it.....
